Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. In her early years she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to the word association. Ford was first interested in acting when she was a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time however, Ford realised that this was not the best place for her. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth attempt she was eventually accepted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut when she appeared on Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate first appeared on television in 1991, appearing on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. She worked on stage regularly, and joined the company's 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy and humour, which she added to her show in 1996, quickly gained the attention of her peers.
